About the Role

The Tooling Engineering Internship provides hands-on experience in foundry tooling design, working directly with engineering and pattern shop teams. Interns will assist with creating and modifying 3D models used to build mold and core tooling, applying foundry casting principles to customer-provided CAD data. This role is ideal for students pursuing engineering or manufacturing-related fields who want real-world exposure to tooling and casting operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work directly with foundry tooling engineers on the design, configuration, and layout of mold and core box tooling

  • Assist with layout of multiple-cavity tooling as directed by Tooling Engineering

  • Design cores, including print areas, to meet casting requirements

  • Utilize Delcam PowerShape software to modify CAD data, including shrink, draft, radii, and fillet adjustments

  • Assist CAM designers with transferring model data for CNC cut-path generation

  • Generate build and assembly drawings for the pattern shop

  • Collaborate with pattern shop personnel to determine tooling rework strategies

Qualifications & Education

  • Knowledge of CNC machining and 3D CAD systems using surfacing (Delcam PowerShape preferred)

  • Ability to create 3D models from 2D layout drawings

  • Understanding of non-uniform shrink, draft, and offset parting in tooling models

  • Ability to compare 3D part models to 2D casting layout drawings for accuracy

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Student Requirements:

  • Enrolled in post-high school education for the Fall 2026 semester

  • Minimum of one completed year in a related field preferred

  • Must be a full-time student (12 or more credit hours)

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
