The Police Officer serves as a sworn law enforcement professional responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, and staff. This role involves enforcing laws and hospital policies, responding to emergencies, and working in potentially high-stress, life-threatening situations. Officers must be able to adapt quickly, demonstrate sound judgment, and perform duties both in the field and within the hospital.
Key Responsibilities

Enforce state laws and hospital regulations to ensure the safety and security of all individuals on hospital grounds.

Respond promptly to emergency and high-risk situations, including potential threats, disturbances, or criminal activity.

Conduct patrols, monitor hospital property, and address security concerns.

Engage with patients, visitors, and staff in a professional, respectful manner.

Complete and maintain accurate incident reports and documentation.

Demonstrate firearms proficiency, with semi-annual requalification.

Work collaboratively with hospital leadership, staff, and local law enforcement agencies.
Qualifications
-
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.

Licensure/Certification:
-
Valid, unrestricted Indiana driver’s license.
-
Eligible for Indiana handgun permit.

Must meet all requirements for Hospital Police Officer certification per I.C. 16-18-4-4.

Successful completion of firearms proficiency testing with requalification twice per year.

Experience:
-
Must be at least 21 years of age by the date of academy graduation.

Successful completion of Indiana Law Enforcement Pre-Basic Training (40 hours) required, unless applicant has prior qualifying academy training.

Skills & Traits: Ability to work under pressure, sound judgment in emergency situations, effective communication skills, and commitment to professionalism and integrity.

Physical Requirements: Must be capable of running, walking, crawling, climbing, stooping, lifting, prolonged sitting, and maintaining sustained postures. Ability to operate in environments with exposure to firearms, bodily fluids, loud noise, dangerous individuals, and severe weather conditions.
