About the Role

The Highway Technician – Maintenance Support Team position supports INDOT’s maintenance contracts and roadway operations within the Tell City Sub-District. This role involves field work, inspections, documentation, equipment operation, and emergency response activities to ensure safe and efficient transportation infrastructure.

Some nighttime, early morning, and late-night hours are required to meet contractor and operational needs. This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy hands-on work, teamwork, and making a direct impact in their community.


Key Responsibilities

  • Comply with all INDOT safety policies and procedures

  • Operate basic highway maintenance and traffic equipment

  • Perform winter operations, including snow and ice removal

  • Assist with emergency response activities (traffic control, lane closures, barricades, bridge closures)

  • Conduct inspections and document findings with detailed reports

  • Perform routine equipment maintenance, including minor repairs, preventative maintenance, refueling, and pre-trip inspections

  • Enter job documentation into the Work Management System (WMS)

  • Maintain, repair, and install traffic signs, route markers, and pavement markings

  • Coordinate assigned work to ensure materials and equipment are available

  • Communicate and provide feedback to supervisors

  • Maintain regular, on-site attendance at assigned work locations


Specialty Assignments (May Vary by Assignment)

  • Asset Inspector: Inspect INDOT assets, assign condition ratings, and evaluate maintenance needs

  • Bridge Maintenance & Repair: Assist with bridge inspections, repairs, and investigations

  • Contracts Inspector: Inspect maintenance contracts and complete required documentation

  • Heavy Equipment Operator: Operate and maintain heavy equipment such as loaders, backhoes, dozers, graders, and pavers

  • Herbicide Operations: Apply herbicides and pesticides and maintain accurate application records

  • Shared Workforce: Support construction projects, sampling procedures, and material testing


Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or High School Equivalency (HSE)

  • Valid Class A or Class B CDL, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire (training provided by INDOT)

  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen

  • General knowledge of highway maintenance, inspection, and safety regulations

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel

  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds

  • Ability to perform physical work outdoors in all weather conditions


CDL Information

  • Employees with a current CDL earn an additional $1.00 per hour

  • Employees without a CDL are given 90 days to obtain one (training provided) and then receive the additional $1.00 per hour upon completion


Pay Rate

  • Starting pay is $22.00 per hour, with adjustments based on education and experience
