About the Role
As a Highway Technician 3, you will work directly on Indiana highways and interstates performing general maintenance and emergency response activities. This is an entry-level position with opportunities for advancement within INDOT.
This role requires mandatory overtime for emergency operations, including winter weather events, and is ideal for individuals who enjoy hands-on outdoor work and being part of a team that serves the public.
Key Responsibilities

Comply with all INDOT safety policies and procedures

Operate basic highway maintenance and traffic equipment
-
Perform general roadway maintenance, including debris removal and pothole repair
-
Load, move, and transport supplies and materials
-
Perform winter operations, including snow and ice removal
-
Assist with emergency response activities such as traffic control, lane closures, and barricade placement
-
Conduct routine equipment inspections and basic maintenance (minor repairs, refueling, pre-trip inspections)

Perform miscellaneous labor tasks as assigned

Maintain regular, on-site attendance at assigned work locations
Specialty Assignment (May Vary)
Traffic Inventory Specialist

Maintain, repair, and install traffic signs, route markers, and pavement markings

Receive, inspect, and record traffic materials and equipment

Maintain inventory of traffic supplies and materials

Operate computerized inventory control systems
Qualifications
-
Valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
-
Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen
-
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
-
Ability to perform physical work including lifting, dragging, stooping, standing, and walking for extended periods

Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions

Ability to operate specialty traffic equipment (e.g., bucket trucks, paint equipment)

Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team

Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation
CDL Information

Employees with a current CDL earn an additional $1.00 per hour
-
Employees without a CDL are given 90 days to obtain one (training provided by INDOT) and then receive the additional $1.00 per hour
Pay Rate
-
Starting pay: $20.00 per hour, with potential adjustments based on education and experience
