About the Role

As a Family Case Manager, you will represent DCS in supporting families and protecting children from abuse and neglect. This role is essential to Indiana’s child welfare system and focuses on maintaining or reunifying families whenever possible while ensuring the safety and well-being of children.

Family Case Managers work closely with families, courts, service providers, and community partners to assess needs, develop case plans, and help children achieve safe and permanent outcomes.


Key Responsibilities

  • Investigate reports of child abuse, neglect, or dependency and determine appropriate next steps

  • Assess risk to children, including determining imminent danger and making removal decisions when necessary

  • Conduct needs assessments and recommend treatment and service options

  • Prepare and present reports, including pre-dispositional and progress reports, and testify in court as required

  • Develop and monitor case plans focused on family stability and permanency

  • Coordinate services with providers and monitor service effectiveness

  • Accept on-call responsibilities to respond to child abuse and neglect allegations

  • Conduct home studies and family histories for foster care, reunification, or adoption

  • Visit children in out-of-home placements to support reunification, adoption, or independent living

  • Maintain accurate case documentation and data to support program evaluation


Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree, or

  • Associate degree plus two (2) years of human services experience, or

  • Thirty (30) college credit hours plus four (4) years of human services experience, or

  • A minimum of four (4) years of human services experience


Additional Knowledge & Skills

  • Knowledge of social work, case management, counseling, and behavioral sciences

  • Knowledge of state and federal child welfare laws and regulations

  • Ability to investigate sensitive situations and conduct effective interviews

  • Strong judgment and crisis management skills

  • Ability to prepare clear, accurate reports and documentation

  • Ability to work effectively with families from diverse backgrounds

  • Ability to work with children with special needs and their families

  • Valid driver’s license required

  • Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation


Salary

  • Starting salary: $47,320, with potential adjustments based on education and experience
