Correctional Officers work as part of a team to ensure the security and safety of staff and incarcerated individuals during 12-hour shifts. Officers maintain order, supervise daily routines, and ensure adherence to facility rules and schedules. This position is physically and mentally demanding but offers excellent pay, benefits, and advancement opportunities within the Indiana Department of Correction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor assigned areas for security, count accuracy, and safety of incarcerated individuals.

  • Follow and enforce established security and facility procedures.

  • Escort incarcerated individuals to meals, programs, recreation, and medical appointments.

  • Maintain records and reports regarding movements, rule violations, and incidents.

  • Manage work details such as cleaning and maintenance assignments.

  • Conduct searches of living areas, individuals, and visitors for contraband.

  • Communicate clearly and effectively with team members and individuals in custody.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE) required.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Ability to work with and around incarcerated individuals in accordance with the DOC mission.

  • Must test negative on all required drug screenings.

  • Must successfully complete personal protection and training requirements.

  • Strong communication and critical-thinking skills.

  • Willingness to work overtime, weekends, and varying shifts (up to 16 consecutive hours).

Salary & Schedule

  • Starting Pay: $22/hour base + $1/hour differential pay

  • Biweekly: $1,972.25

  • Annual: Approximately $51,278.50

  • Work 7 shifts per pay period (12-hour shifts, includes 1 weekend)
