About the Role

As a Correctional Officer at Branchville Correctional Facility, you will work as part of a professional team in a medium-security facility for adult males. During a typical 12-hour shift, you will ensure the safety of staff and incarcerated individuals while maintaining order and ensuring daily activities and programs run smoothly.

Correctional Officers work 85.75 hours per two-week pay period, consisting of 7 total shifts, including one weekend. This role is physically, mentally, and emotionally demanding and requires constant awareness and sound judgment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor assigned areas for safety, security, and accountability of incarcerated individuals

  • Enforce established security procedures and facility rules

  • Supervise incarcerated individuals during work assignments and daily activities

  • Escort incarcerated individuals throughout the facility for meals, medical care, work, and recreation

  • Conduct searches of housing areas, individuals, and visitors for unauthorized items

  • Maintain accurate records and reports related to movements, activities, and rule violations

  • Support facility operations to ensure programs and schedules proceed as planned


Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or High School Equivalency (HSE)

  • At least 18 years of age

  • Ability to pass all required drug screenings

  • Willingness to work mandatory and voluntary overtime, including up to 16 consecutive hours

  • Ability to work effectively with incarcerated individuals in alignment with IDOC’s mission

  • Strong communication and critical thinking skills

  • Ability to understand and properly use chemical agents

  • Veteran and law enforcement candidates are encouraged to apply

  • Must successfully complete personal protection training to continue employment


Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Physically, emotionally, and mentally demanding role

  • Requires prolonged vigilance and alertness

  • Frequent walking, standing, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, pushing, and pulling

  • Exposure to potentially stressful or hazardous situations

  • Strong observational and hearing skills required

  • Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation


Salary

  • $22.00/hour base pay + $1.00/hour shift differential

  • Approx. $1,972.25 biweekly or $51,278.50 annually

  • Candidates with relevant experience may qualify for higher starting pay

  • Overtime opportunities available (not included in base salary figures)
