As a Special Education Teacher, you will play a critical role in empowering students with diverse learning needs, helping them achieve their academic, social, and emotional goals.
Key Responsibilities
Instructional Support:
- Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) tailored to each student’s needs.
- Provide direct instruction and support to students in both individual and group settings.
- Adapt and modify curriculum to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities.
- Utilize various teaching methods and resources to foster engagement and success.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with general education teachers to integrate students into the general education environment whenever possible.
- Communicate regularly with parents and guardians about student progress and goals.
- Collaborate with other specialists, paraprofessionals, and support staff to provide comprehensive services.
Student Advocacy:
- Foster a supportive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages student confidence and self-advocacy.
- Monitor and evaluate student progress, adjusting instruction and strategies as needed.
- Advocate for students’ needs and ensure compliance with all state and federal special education laws.
Professional Responsibilities:
- Maintain accurate and timely records, including IEP documentation and progress reports.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current on best practices and regulations in special education.
- Contribute to a positive school culture by participating in school-wide activities and initiatives.
Qualifications
Education and Certification:
- Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Valid teaching license with a special education endorsement in the state of Indiana.
Skills and Competencies:
- Strong understanding of special education laws, IEP processes, and instructional strategies.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Ability to adapt to various teaching scenarios and manage classroom behavior effectively.
- Dedication to fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment.
