About the Role

The CNC Programmer, Sr./Machinist is responsible for leading the engineering, programming, setup, and optimization of CNC machining operations supporting aerospace manufacturing. This role works with advanced equipment including multi-axis mills, lathes, and mill/turn machines to ensure precision, efficiency, and quality.

This position plays a critical leadership role within the machining group, supporting production flow, continuous improvement, and technical excellence while working closely with scheduling, estimating, and engineering teams.


Key Responsibilities

CNC Programming & Machining Leadership

  • Program, edit, and optimize CNC programs for 2-axis lathes; 3-, 4-, and 5-axis vertical and horizontal mills; and advanced mill/turn machines

  • Support equipment including Mori Seiki 5-axis mills and 9-axis dual-spindle mill/turn machines

  • Lead machining group activities and serve as a technical team lead

Programming & Process Optimization

  • Translate engineering instructions into CAM programs

  • Write and modify CNC programs to improve efficiency, reduce cycle time, and enhance contouring of complex shapes

  • Analyze and select appropriate tooling, speeds, and feeds based on material and part requirements

  • Reduce setup times through improved fixturing and machining strategies

Production Support & Quality Assurance

  • Verify machine settings through first-run parts and sample inspections

  • Maintain machining specifications by monitoring drilling, turning, grooving, threading, and cutting operations

  • Troubleshoot machining and NC program issues to ensure uninterrupted product flow

  • Adhere to quality assurance procedures and international machining standards

Planning & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Plan machining operations and stock requirements by reviewing work orders, drawings, and specifications

  • Interface directly with scheduling and estimating teams to determine machining time and cost impacts

  • Develop fixture designs and machining processes to support production efficiency


Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Associate degree preferred or equivalent education and work experience (Machine Tool Technology or related field)

  • 4–6 years of CNC machining and programming experience

Technical Knowledge & Skills

  • Advanced knowledge of CNC programming principles and languages

  • Strong understanding of tooling, speeds, feeds, and machining sequences

  • General knowledge of aerospace manufacturing and machine shop operations

  • Ability to manually program NC machines

Professional & Analytical Skills

  • Ability to interpret complex technical instructions in mathematical, written, and diagram formats

  • Strong problem-solving and data analysis skills

  • Ability to prioritize assignments with general direction

  • Effective communication skills with internal teams and external stakeholders


Work Environment & Physical Demands

This role requires regular standing, walking, and machine interaction, with the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. The position involves repetitive tasks requiring accuracy, manual dexterity, and consistent use of required personal protective equipment (PPE).
