About the Role
The Med Surg / ICU Director is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and clinical oversight of the Medical-Surgical and Intensive Care units. This role balances administrative leadership with direct involvement in patient care, ensuring quality outcomes, staff development, and compliance with all regulatory and accreditation standards.
Approximately 75% of the role is administrative in nature, with the remaining time spent supporting clinical operations and patient care needs.
Key Responsibilities

Provide leadership and operational oversight for the Med Surg and ICU departments

Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, licensure requirements, and accreditation standards

Promote high standards of patient care, safety, and clinical excellence

Lead, mentor, and support nursing staff and department leadership

Make informed decisions in complex, emotional, or high-pressure situations
-
Participate in patient care as needed to support unit operations

Implement new ideas, initiatives, and process improvements

Monitor department performance, quality metrics, and outcomes

Maintain effective communication with staff, physicians, administration, and patients
Qualifications
Education
-
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required
-
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
-
Ongoing continuing education required due to evolving regulatory and accreditation standards
Licensure & Certification
-
Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Indiana required
-
Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications required
-
Competency in ECG rhythm strip interpretation required

Must provide copies of all licensure and certifications for personnel records
Experience
-
Management experience preferred
-
Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a staff nurse preferred
Special Knowledge & Skills

Knowledge of accreditation standards for Med Surg and ICU departments

Understanding of federal and state healthcare laws and regulations

Strong leadership, decision-making, and problem-solving skills

Excellent communication skills across all levels of the organization

Prolonged periods of close concentration and attention to detail

Ability to make decisions in potentially controversial or emotional situations
