As a Highway Technician, you will help maintain Indiana’s highways and interstates by performing essential maintenance tasks, assisting with traffic control, and responding to emergencies. This entry-level position provides on-the-job training, offers opportunities for career growth, and requires mandatory overtime during emergency operations, including winter months.
Key Responsibilities
- Follow all INDOT safety policies and procedures.
- Operate highway maintenance equipment to repair, clean, and maintain roads and rights-of-way.
- Assist with traffic control, lane closures, and emergency response activities.
- Perform winter operations, including snow and ice removal.
- Move and load supplies and materials as needed.
- Conduct equipment inspections and minor maintenance.
- Additional duties may include installing traffic signs, maintaining inventory records, and operating specialized traffic equipment.
Salary & Compensation
- $20.00/hour starting wage.
- CDL holders earn an additional $1 per hour.
- Candidates without a CDL have 90 days to obtain one (training provided by INDOT).
Location
- This position is based at INDOT’s Birdseye Unit.
Qualifications
- Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) or ability to obtain within 90 days.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs., stand, walk, and perform physical tasks for extended periods.
- Willingness to work in inclement weather conditions.
- Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team.
- Must pass a drug test as a condition of employment.
