Free, confidential and anonymous HIV testing and counseling are offered in cooperation with the Indiana State Department of Health. These services are provided in the health department office in Cannelton by appointment. The health department is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Telephone 547-2746. The following services are offered through the Perry County Health Department:

    • The county health nurse visits homebound patients through a referral system. She also works closely with all the county schools to provide immunizations, screenings and health education. The nurse also holds a walk-in immunization clinic from 3 to 6 p.m. each Monday at the North Perry Head Start building and from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays at the health department office in Cannelton.
    • The Public Health Initiative Clinic operates a prenatal and family planning clinic through the health department. This clinic is held at the health department office in Cannelton.
    • The county sanitarian is responsible for managing the food surveillance program throughout the county by regular inspections of food-service and food-storage facilities. Another concern of the local sanitarian is directing the on-site residential sewage disposal program by making site evaluations, issuing permits and making the final inspection of the completed septic system. The investigation of communicable disease outbreaks, including food-borne illness complaints, identifying and eradicating disease-transmitting vectors, animal bite reports and the subsequent quarantine of the biting animal, housing complaint investigation and abatement, and various environmental complaints are also the sanitarian’s responsibility.
    • The Vital Records Division registrar is responsible for recording, issuing and forwarding to the state department of health, births and deaths occurring in this county. Certified death certificates are $6 for the first and $3 for each additional copy. The records start in 1882, but due to the 1937 flood, a number of the Tell City records were destroyed.
